Looking into it closer, those vacuum pumps are a weak link on the om617, and when they go south, the bearing disintegrates sending hardening steel into the oil. The first pic is of the vacuum pump. Aug 07, 2009· After some more cleaning with Brake cleaner, we discovered that the vacuum pump is the source. It is leaking out of the forward part and driver''s side of the vacuum pump. It is producing a "drip" every minute or so. Those kits were for an ''81 vehicle, which has an OM617 engine. Your car has an OM603 engine, with an entirely different pump.

You''ll see bearings, yoke and rod inside, none of which should be loose. Bearing should spin freely. Remove pump cover and you should see a 10MM nut on rod sticking through middle of piston, and three check valves.
